17 months!

I can’t believe how much Annie has changed just in this past week! I remember reading somewhere that there’s a huge developmental shift at around 18 months, but I had no concept at all of just how huge it was! In the past week, she’s

  • Sung a complex song on her own. Okay, not the whole song, but she got pretty much all of the nouns and adjectives. And it’s a hard, long, multi-verse song. (As opposed to the one she sung a couple of weeks ago which was a simple and goofy song.)
  • Started using verbs and adjectives reliably and correctly, and will occasionally change verb tenses (play/playing, go/going).
  • Has REAL conversations where she correctly answers a complex question. (“‘What are we going to do after Daddy gets home?’ ‘Eat dinner!'” “‘Where’s the kitty?’ “Upstairs.'”)
  • For whatever reason, knows the letters “o” and “c” and loves to point them out.
  • Knows one color–yellow. Everything is yellow. It’s a bright sunny world our little Annie Joy lives in!
  • Has figured out that sometimes we talk to God, and that when we do, we say “Amen” when we’re done. She always whispers this for some reason, and it’s very sweet.
  • Has made the transition from calling her baby doll “baby” to calling any of her animals “baby.” Her current favorite animal is still her beloved “Fwoggy!”
  • Can know how to get what she wants, even if Mommy doesn’t always approve. The other day Grady had a piece of toast. Annie had finished hers, so she walked over to Grady and took his. When I admonished her, she looked at me, looked at him, broke the toast in half, and gave him half back. I admit that all I could do was laugh.
  • Now understands the concept of “MINE!”   Alas.
  • Knows that when we hurt someone, we say sorry.
  • Uses please and thank you relatively reliably. (And will occasionally follow this up by mumbling to herself, “Good manners. Good manners.” Not that I’ve been repetitive with this or anything. ;-) )
  • Understands most directions now and usually follows them. (As much as a toddler who’s discovered her own will does.) It’s been WONDERFUL–I can tell her to go pick up the book on the floor by the chair and put it on the shelf, and she will. We’re finally at the point where she does just about as much toy cleanup as I do… although it takes roughly five times as long as it used to. I’m pretty okay with this, though. ;-)
  • Her favorite game right now is to run up to you and say, “hi!” or occasionally, “hi [name]”, or if she’s feeling particularly goofy, “hi baby!” She will continue to do this until you say “hi” back, at which point she’ll either give you a big hug, or she’ll run away cackling madly and then come back and do it again. I really need to get video of her cackle, by the way, because it’s hilarious.

(Having said all this, if you see her and she doesn’t talk all that much to you, don’t be too offended… she’s pretty hesitant around people she doesn’t interact with constantly. It’s the same thing with new situations–she has to observe and evaluate for awhile before making her final decision about how to handle it.)

As far as physical development, she runs a bit now and is experimenting with various methods of climbing. She hasn’t figured out that she can move objects to help her climb on other objects, which is fine with me. :-p She is, as she’s always been, very cautious and prefers to watch an activity, sometimes for quite awhile, before jumping in. She’s not a fan of the swings at the park and will go down the slide only if you put her up at the top already seated (in which case she likes it). She does love to find “rrrrock!” though. She also likes to pick up little bits of trash she finds and bring them to me (she does this inside as well as outside) and I always thank her for bringing it to me and helping keep things clean.

Anyway, I was going to wait until 18 months to do this update with her next bear picture, but she was 17 months yesterday and I decided that, given how much she’s changed just in the past week, I would just do it now. :-)

Ethel drives the bus

I call this picture “Ethel drives the bus.”  As a bit of background, our Little People “Noah’s Ark” set came with Noah and his wife.  Well, I couldn’t call her just “wife.”  And “Mrs. Noah” seemed a bit degrading too, even though the Bible never did give her a name of her own.  So we named her Ethel (or “Eeff-uhl” as Annie says it).  Annie had her driving the bus the other day, and I realized that if Noah drove the ark, Annie must have decided that Ethel would drive the bus.  They’re well-suited for their positions, too, I think: while it didn’t matter if Noah wandered aimlessly with the ark, as he had nowhere in particular to be while the floodwaters receded, as a bus driver, Ethel would need to know where she’s going, and therefore not be afraid to stop and ask for directions as needed.  :-D
